參考文獻依照以下順序排列:
一、古代地方志
二、族譜
三、碑刻
四、其他古代中文史料
五、外文著作及二手資料
地方志條目遵循戴思哲(Joseph R. Dennis)的《古代中國地方志的編纂、刊刻與閱讀,一一一○—一七○○》(Writing, Publishing, and Reading Local Gazetteers in Imperial China, 1100-1700)頁343的原則,除了將帶有前綴詞(例如「重修」或某個年號)的地方志書名只列出一次並且省略前綴。在列出珍稀文獻時,我都附上發現該文獻的地點。
族譜條目盡可能包含愈多的資訊:名目、刊行年分或最近寫成序言的年分,以及所有出版資訊。族譜幾乎都是多人合力編纂而成的,因此一般沒必要附上編纂者姓名。至於未出版或私人印製的族譜(大多數族譜都屬於此類),我則注明自己抄寫族譜或做筆記的地點。
碑刻條目包括篇名、刻寫日期,以及其目前的所在地。
如果文獻的名目為一般人所熟知,我便會省略該文獻的作者。讀者可以從https://scholar.harvard.edu/szonyi/ABGreferences查閱許多未出版文獻的謄抄或影印本。
