Notes (1) This beginning corresponds to Ui. I. III, 4 a 17, and the end of this leaf to Ui. I. III, 5 a 19.
(2) Cf. Ui. I. III, 4 a 22 f.
(3) Cf. Ui. I. III, 4 a 28-29.
(4) The meaning of Toch. A miṣi is here non-metaphorically ‘field, arable land’, cf. Thomas, 1964, p. 126.
(5) The two words kākmärtik and kṣatrapai seem to refer to the same person; final -ai , the reading of which is certain, in the latter term remains problem-atic. Since pai (with hiatus) is the Prakritic form of Skt. pati - ‘master’, one can suggest that kṣatrapai reflects the partial resanskritization of the Middle Indic form corresponding to a compound Skt. kṣetra -pati - ‘master of the fields’, of which Toch. A miṣisā kākmärtik would be a gloss.
(6) The reading is certain, but the form may be slightly miswritten for tmaṃ , which fits the context, for the beginning of a sentence.
(7) Cf. Ui. I . III, 4 b 4-6.
(8) Stanza of presumably 4 x 12 (5/7) syllables; the last syllable of the fourth pāda is to be restored on the first line of the verso: probably the form of a demonstrative.
(9) The expected form of the ablative plural is niṣpaläntwäṣ , but the reading is certain.
(10) Cf. Ui. I. III, 4 b 19 ff.
(11) This syllable has been left out by the scribe.
(12) Cf. Ui. I. III, 4 b 24 ff.
(13) Cf. Ui. I. III, 5 a 3 f.
(14) Ibid., 5.
(15) Cf. Ui. I. III, 5 a 14 f.
